چکیده

The question of tractable classes of constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs) has been studied for a long time, and is now a very active research domain. However, studies of tractable classes are typically very theoretical. They usually introduce classes of instances together with polynomial time algorithms for recognizing and solving them, and the algorithms can be used only for the new class. In this paper, we address the issue of tractable classes of CSPs from a different perspective. We investigate the complexity of classical, generic algorithms for solving CSPs (such as Forward Checking). We introduce a new parameter for measuring their complexity and derive new complexity bounds. By relating the complexity of CSP algorithms to graph-theoretic parameters, our analysis allows us to point at new tractable classes, which can be solved directly by the usual CSP algorithms in polynomial time, and without the need to recognize the classes in advance.

A New Method for Solving Constraint Satisfaction Problems

Many important problems in Artificial Intelligence can be defined as Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSP). These types of problems are defined by a limited set of variables, each having a limited domain and a number of Constraints on the values of those variables (these problems are also called Consistent Labeling Problems (CLP), in which “Labeling means assigning a value to a variable.) Solu...

Increasing Tree Search Efficiency for Constraint Satisfaction Problems

In this paper we explore the number of tree search operations required to solve binary constraint satisfaction problems. We show analytically and experimentally that the two principles of first trying the places most likely to fail and remembering what has been done to avoid repeating the same mistake twice improve the standard backtracking search. We experimentally show that a lookahead proced...

Where the Exceptionally Hard Problems Are 1

Constraint satisfaction problems exhibit a phase transition as a problem parameter is varied, from a region where most problems are easy and soluble to a region where most problems are easy but insoluble. In the intervening phase transition region, the median problem diiculty is greatest. However, in the easy and soluble region, occasional exceptionally hard problems (ehps) can be found, which ...

On Forward Checking for Non-binary Constraint Satisfaction

Solving non-binary constraint satisfaction problems, a crucial challenge today, can be tackled in two different ways: translating the non-binary problem into an equivalent binary one, or extending binary search algorithms to solve directly the original problem. The latter option raises some issues when we want to extend definitions written for the binary case. This paper focuses on the well-kno...
